Swiss National Bank Cuts Gold and Silver Mining Share Holdings

In August we reported the existence of the Swiss National Bank’s gold and silver mining portfolio. As at August 4, 2016, the Swiss National Bank (SNB) precious metal mining share portfolio based on its holdings as of June 30, 2016, was approximately $987 million (see chart below).

Today, the Swiss National Bank filed its Form 13-F with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, detailing its U.S. securities positions as of September 30 2016. The Swiss National Bank reported holdings of over 2,500 U.S. companies as of September 30, 2016 worth approximately $60 billion.

The latest Swiss National Bank’s 13F showed a decline in the number of mining shares held and their values. The value of the SNB’s gold and silver mining portfolio fell to approximately $876 million.

As of June 30, 2016, the Swiss National Bank held thirty gold and silver mining companies. As of September 30, 2016, the Swiss National Bank held thirty-one companies gold and silver mining companies, adding a position in Osisko Gold Royalties Ltd.

The SNB cut its holdings in seventeen of its thirty gold and silver mining companies, including its top three holdings – Newmont Mining (56,800 shares sold), Goldcorp (64,700 shares sold) and Franco Nevada (13,800 shares sold). They added to eight of their positions, including Agnico Eagle Mines (added 5,780 shares) and IAM Gold (added 30,100 shares) and left five positions unchanged.

The bulk of the selling took place in the SNB’s largest gold and silver mining share holdings and the additions and inactivity were in the SNB’s smaller share holdings.
