The Perth Mint was founded in 1899 as a branch of the British Royal Mint, and is unique among the various government mints in that it is also a silver and gold refiner and does not produce coins for general circulation in Australia. All of the coins produced by the Perth Mint, however, are considered legal tender in Australia. (with face values far below their precious metal content).

Coins for general circulation in Australia are produced at the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra.

The Perth Mint Silver Kangaroo coin was minted in response to inadequate supply of silver bullion coins from the Canadian (Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins) and United States Mints (American Silver Eagle coins) in 2015. The U.S. and Canadian Mints set sales records in 2014 and are on pace to do so again in 2015, but a surge in demand caused production bottlenecks and product delivery delays, leading to the introduction of the Silver Kangaroo to fill the void in September 2015.

The Perth Mint has announced that the Silver Kangaroo will be minted in unlimited amounts, subject only to demand.
