The December 2014 Silver To Gold Sales Ratio: 189.15 to 1

The silver to gold sales ratio is measured by the sales of physical gold bullion vs. sales of physical silver bullion at the U.S. Mint. We track the sales of one ounce American Gold Eagles vs. one ounce American Silver Eagles.

American Silver Eagles out sold one ounce American Gold Eagles nearly 106 to one in 2014.

American Silver Eagle Record Was in Ounces Not Dollars

Here are two charts showing the dollar amounts of silver and gold sold at the U.S. Mint as measured by sales of one ounce American Gold and Silver Eagle coins:

The U.S Mint sold 189 times more silver eagle than gold eagle coins in December, yet the total dollar value of silver eagle coins sold out paced the value of gold eagle coins sold by only $12 million.

Even though the U.S. Mint sold a record amount of American Silver Eagles in 2014 and sales of American Gold Eagles declined 44% from 2013, the dollar value of gold sold at the U.S. Mint in 2014 was greater than the dollar value of silver sold.

Sales of American Gold Eagles peaked in 1999 but because the price of gold was substantially lower then, it was nowhere near the peak in dollar terms.

American Silver Eagle Sales

In December the U.S. Mint sold 2,459,000 one ounce Silver Eagles down 28% from 3,426,000 Silver Eagles sold in November and up 105% from 1,200,000 Silver Eagles sold in December 2013.

Sales of American Silver Eagles in 2014: 44,006,000.

Sales of American Silver Eagles in 2014 surpassed the 2013 record of 42,675,000 by 1,331,000 or 3.1%.

Total December 2014 silver bullion sales at the U.S. Mint, including America The Beautiful five ounce coins: 2,519,500 ounces**.

Total 2014 silver bullion sales at the U.S. Mint, including sales of America The Beautiful five ounce coins: 44,682,500 ounces.

American Gold Eagle Sales

In December, the U.S. Mint sold 13,000 one ounce Gold Eagles down 73% from 49,000 sold in November and down 76% from 53,500 Gold Eagles sold in December 2013.

The United State Mint sold a total of 54,000 American Gold Eagles in December including fractional 1/10, 1/4 and 1/2 ounce and one ounce coins, down 26% from December 2013 and down 34% from November 2014.

Total ounces of American Gold Eagles sold, including fractional coins: 524,500

2014 sales of one ounce American Gold Eagles down 44% from last year (415,500 vs. 743,500).

Total sales of American Gold eagle coins down 22% (1,144,500 vs. 1,458,500)

Total ounces of American Gold Eagle coins sold, including fractional coins down 34% from last year (524,500 vs. 800,000)

2014 sales of one ounce American Gold Eagles down 43% from last year (415,500 vs. 743,500).

Total December 2014 Gold Bullion Sales at the U.S. Mint: 22,500 ounces, including 41,000 fractional ounce gold Eagles (totaling 5,000 ounces) and 4,500 24K one ounce Buffalo gold coins*.

Total 2014 Gold Bullion Sales at the U.S. Mint: 702,000 ounces, including 729,000 fractional ounce gold Eagles (totaling 109,000 ounces) and 177,500 24K one ounce Buffalo gold coins*.

In December, the U.S. Mint sold approximately $40 million worth of silver, including one ounce Silver Eagles and five ounce America the Beautiful silver coins**) The Mint sold approximately $27 million worth of one ounce Gold Eagles. The total value of physical gold bullion sold at the U.S. Mint in September, including sales of one ounce and fractional ounce Gold Eagles and one ounce Gold Buffalo coins, was approximately $38.5 million.

America The Beautiful Silver Coin Sales Update:

In December, the Mint reported sales of 1,100 Shenandoah National Park coins (the total SNP coins sold this year is 24,400). The U.S. Mint sold 4,000 Great Sand Dunes National Park coins in November (bringing the total of GSD coins sold this year to 21,900). The U.S. Mint sold 7,000 Everglades National Park coin in December bringing the total sold to 34,000.

Total ounces of silver sold in December attributed to the sales of America the Beautiful coins was 60,500 (12,100 five ounce coins sold).

In 2014, the U.S. Mint sold 135,300 American the Beautiful silver five ounce coins for a total of 676,500 ounces sold.

In 2013, the U.S. Mint sold 160,000 silver America the Beautiful five ounce coins for a total of 800,000 ounces sold.
