U.S. Mint Opens January With Strong Gold Sales.
Sales of one ounce American Gold Eagle coins are at 47,500 after first two days of sale.
Sales of 24k American Gold Buffalo coins are at 23,000 after two days.
On Monday, after the U.S. Mint published first day sales figures, we reported the massive American Silver Eagle sales. While American Gold Eagle sales at the U.S. Mint have not been record breaking, they reflect one of the strongest starts in years.
In the chart below you can see the lower sales of American Gold Eagle coins the past few years relative to sales during the period of the global financial crisis from 2008-10. While it’s too early to call, January’s strong American Gold Eagle sales so far may mark the beginning of a reversal of that trend.

American Gold Buffalo Coin Sales
Since 2006, the U.S. Mint has produced a 24K gold coin, the American Gold Buffalo. Sales of this coin have ranged from about a third to a sixth of those of American Gold Eagles. Even with exceptionally strong American Gold Eagle sales the first two days of January, sales of American Gold Buffalo coins are about half (23,000 vs 47,500) during the same time period.
The U.S. Mint has sold more than half the amount of Gold Buffalo coins in the first two days of 2016 than it sold in all of January 2015.
Sales of American Gold Buffalo coins the first two days of January bode well for 2016.
