March sales of 3,519,000 American Silver Eagles bring the year to date sales to 12,071,000 behind 2014’s record pace.

Sales of one ounce American Gold Eagle sales were up in March to 35,000 from 12,500 in February.

U.S. Mint Sold 100.54 times more American Silver Eagles than one ounce American Gold Eagles in March.

The silver to gold sales ratio is measured by the sales of physical gold bullion vs. sales of physical silver bullion at the U.S. Mint. We track the sales of one ounce American Gold Eagles vs. one ounce American Silver Eagles.

American Silver Eagles out sold one ounce American Gold Eagles nearly 106 to one in 2014. The ratio is even higher in the first three months of 2015.

American Silver Eagle Record Was in Ounces Not Dollars

Here are two charts showing the dollar amounts of silver and gold sold at the U.S. Mint as measured by sales of one ounce American Gold and Silver Eagle coins:

While the US Mint is selling well over 100 times the amount of silver than gold, the value of the gold sold is higher as the price of silver is near all time lows relative to the price of gold.

Sales of American Gold Eagles peaked in 1999 but because the price of gold was substantially lower then, it was nowhere near the peak in dollar terms.

American Silver Eagle Sales

In March 2015, the U.S. Mint sold 3,519,000 one ounce Silver Eagles up 16% from 3,022,000 Silver Eagles sold in February 2015 and down 34% from 5,354,000 Silver Eagles sold in March 2014.

American Gold Eagle Sales

In January 2015, the U.S. Mint sold 35,000 one ounce Gold Eagles up 180% from 12,500 sold in February 2015 and up 119% from 16,000 Gold Eagles sold in March 2014.

The United State Mint sold a total of 118,000 American Gold Eagles in March 2015 including fractional 1/10, 1/4 and 1/2 ounce and one ounce coins, up 83% from February 2015 and up 126% from March 2014.

Total March 2015 Gold Bullion Sales at the U.S. Mint: 56,000 ounces, including 83,000 fractional ounce gold Eagles (totaling 11,500 ounces) and 12,000 24K one ounce Buffalo gold coins*.

In March 2015, the U.S. Mint sold approximately $59.0 million worth of silver. The Mint sold approximately $41.2 million worth of one ounce Gold Eagles. The total value of physical gold bullion sold at the U.S. Mint in September, including sales of one ounce and fractional ounce Gold Eagles and one ounce Gold Buffalo coins, was approximately $66.0 million.

America The Beautiful Update

The U.S. Mint also released sales results for the first 2015 American the Beautiful five ounce silver coin – the Homestead National Monument of American coin. The United States Mint sold another 15,000 of these coins bringing the total number of coins sold to 35,000 and the number of ounces to 175,000.

In 2014, the U.S. Mint sold 135,300 American the Beautiful silver five ounce coins for a total of 676,500 ounces sold.

In 2013, the U.S. Mint sold 160,000 silver America the Beautiful five ounce coins for a total of 800,000 ounces sold.
