The Royal Canadian Mint released its 2015 annual report this week. The report showed that gold sales at the Canadian Mint rose 34.8% in 2015 to 953,000 ounces over sales of 707,000 ounces in 2014.

The Canadian Mint also reported selling 34,300,00 ounces of silver in 2015. The Canadian Mint sold 35.99 times more silver than gold in 2015. Gold sales at the Canadian Mint rose sharply in 2008 as a result of the financial crisis that year and have averaged about 1 million ounces a year since 2008. (see chart below).

Silver sales at the Canadian Mint have also risen since 2008, but while gold sales have plateaued, silver sales have skyrocketed, climbing from just one million ounces in 2005 to over 34 million ounces in 2015.

The sharp increase in silver sales generated a comment in the Mint’s annual reported: “Although activity in the silver and gold bullion markets have historically correlated, many investors have shifted to silver as the preferred investment over gold due to its affordability and the safety net provided by industrial demand“.
