Secondary Silver Miners Fuel Increase in Output
While overall silver mining production increased 2.1% in 2015*, the top ten silver mining companies in the world increased their production 4.7%. The increase in the top twenty silver miners’ production was driven by a 6.2% increase in the top secondary silver mining companies. The top seven primary silver mining companies saw a collective increase of 2.3%.
Secondary silver miners are those that produce silver as a by-product of the mining of base metals lead, copper and zinc. About 2/3 of overall silver mining production comes from secondary miners.
The Top Silver Mining Countries In the World By The Numbers
Here are highlights from the top silver mining countries in the world.
- The top ten silver mining companies increased output 6.1% in 2015 from 2014 from 290.8 million ounces to 308.6 million ounces.
- The top twenty silver mining companies increased output 4.8% in 2015 from 2014, from 429.6 million ounces to 450.1 million ounces.
- The top ten silver mining companies constituted about 35% of total global output in 2015 (308.6 million ounces out of 886.7 million ounces).
- The top twenty silver mining companies constituted about 51% of total global output in 2015 (450.1 million ounces out of 886.7 million ounces).
- Fresnillo, the world’s largest silver mining company constituted 4.9% of total global output in 2015 (43 million ounces out of 886.7 million ounces) up from 4.7% in 2014 (40.4 million ounces out of 868.3 million ounces).
- Four of the top ten silver mining companies in 2015 were primary silver mining companies.
- Seven of the top twenty silver mining companies in 2015 were primary silver mining companies.
- Primary silver mining companies constituted 39.4% of the output of the top ten silver mining companies (121.6 million ounces out of 308.6 million ounces).
- Primary silver mining companies constitute 36.4% of the output of the top twenty silver mining companies.(163.9 million ounces out of 450.1 million ounces)
