What are SDRs?
SDRs or Special Drawing Rights were created in 1969 by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
SDRs are a central bank reserve assets intended to provide central bank liquidity for expanding trade that could not be met by dollars or gold.
SDRs are reserve assets based on the value of a basket of five currencies: the U.S. Dollar, the Euro, the Chinese Yuan, the Japanese Yen and the British Pound.
The Dollar represents about 41%, the Euro about 31%, the Yuan about 11%, and the Pound and Yen about 8% each of the value of the SDR.
SDRs are not backed by the five currencies, but are valued in relation to them.
SDRs are allocated to IMF member countries in proportion to their size of the global economy and are held as reserve assets.
Only the IMF can issue SDRs
There are about $300 billion SDRs allocated to IMF members.
SDRs cannot be used to buy goods and services, but can be exchanged among central banks.
There are no SDR notes or coins.
SDRs can be a global currency or a world reserve currency like the dollar but NOT a one world currency
