iShares Silver Trust ETF Experiences Large Weekly Outflow

On December 4, Nasdaq.com reported that week-over-week there was an approximate $42.2 million dollar outflow from the iShares Silver Trust (SLV), or an outflow of 2,700,000 ounces of silver (from 363,050,000 to 360,350,000) or a 0.7% decrease week over week.

SLV is by far the largest silver Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) and has grown steadily since it first launched in 2006 (see chart below) and has never experienced a prolonged period of outflows. While one week with a large outflow does not indicate a trend, it is important to monitor as the amount of silver held in ETF’s has been on a constant upward trajectory. Gold ETFs in contrast, have experienced large out flows the past few years.

Despite last weeks’ relatively large outflow, silver in ETF’s remains near an all time high.
