Last night’s live stream discussed Russia’s recent gold additions to reserves and Russian sale of U.S. Treasuries.
Some have erroneously concluded that Russia sold $81 billion in Treasuries from March to May and used the proceeds to buy gold. This is not true. Russia’s TOTAL gold holdings of 1944 tons are worth just $78 billion as of June 30, 2018.
Russian overall foreign reserves have been essentially unchanged since March 2018, indicating that the proceeds from the sale of U.S. Treasuries remained on the Central Bank of Russia’s balance sheet but in different form – perhaps in U.S. Dollars, Rubles, Euros, Yen or some other currency or debt securities.
