The U.S. Mint has sold 288,800 America the Beautiful (ATB) five ounce silver coins through November 21, 2016, totaling 1,444,000 ounces of silver. The number of ATB coins sold this year is the second most in the coins history (see chart below). The largest annual sales of ATB coins was in 465,100, totaling 2,325,500 ounces of silver in 2011.
In contrast, the U.S. Mint has sold 37,121,500 one ounce American Silver Eagles through November 21, 2016. The record for American Silver Eagle sales is 47,000,000 in 2015.

The first two releases in the 2016 America The Beautiful series are among the top five selling coins ever.
Each year since 2010, the U.S. Mint has released a series of five America the Beautiful five ounce silver coins. In 2016, the five coins released are the Shawnee National Forest, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park , Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Theodore Roosevelt National Park and Fort Moultrie (Fort Sumter National Monument.
The first coin in the 2016 American The Beautiful series the Shawnee National Park sold 105,000, the second most of any ATB coins.

History of Fort Moultrie/Fort Sumter.
Fort Moultrie is located in Charleston Harbor on Sullivan’s Island, off the coast of South Carolina. In 1776 a partially built fort stood on Sullivan’s Island and came under attack by the British Royal Navy. Colonel William Moultrie of the U.S. continental forces successfully resisted the attack despite the lack of cover that the partially built fort provided. The U.S. continental forces were aided by local soft Palmetto logs that instead of shattering when struck, repelled cannon ball fire!
The Fort Moultrie coin does not feature Colonel William Moultrie. Rather, a depiction of U.S. Revolutionary War hero Sergeant William Jasper is shown carrying the South Carolina flag after its flagstaff was destroyed during the British Naval attack.
Nearby in Charleston Harbor, is Fort Sumter named after a U.S. Revolutionary War hero General Thomas Sumter. Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861 and The Civil War began. The Confederates were able to cause the Union forces to surrender as they cut off supplies to the fort. Fort Sumter and Moultrie remained under Confederate control until the waning months of the war in 1865.
The two forts now form Fort Sumter National Monument.

In 2013, the U.S. Mint sold 160,000 silver America the Beautiful five ounce coins for a total of 800,000 ounces sold.
From 2010-2016 the U.S. Mint has sold 1,540,700 ATB coins and totaling 7,703,500 ounces of silver.
