Apple’s 2016 Environmental Responsibility Report
Recycling

“we’ve developed recycling collection events, take-back initiatives, and efforts like Apple Renew, a global program that lets you bring used Apple devices to any Apple Store for reuse or responsible recycling.
This program recovered 6,612 pounds of silver (105,792 ounces) and 2,204 pounds (35,264 ounces) of gold in 2015.

“So we invented Liam, a line of robots designed to disassemble 1.2 million phones a year, sorting all their high-quality components and reducing the need to mine more resources from the earth.”

Watch Apple’s Liam extract cobalt, lithium, gold, copper, silver and platinum from an old iphone.

Apple’s 2017 Environmental Responsibility Report

“For every 100,000 iPhone 6 devices, Liam has the potential to recover the following materials:
Aluminum (1900 kg)
Copper (800 kg)
Gold (0.3 kg)
Platinum Group Metals (0.4 kg)
Silver (7 kg)
Tin (55 kg)
Rare Earth Elements (24 kg)
Cobalt (550 kg)
Tungsten (3.5 kg)
Tantalum (2.5 kg)”

Assuming Liam is in full prodcution of 1.2 million phones a year, he would recover:

Gold (0.3 kg/9.64 oz) X 12 =3.6 kg/115.743 ounces = $144,678 (115.743 X $1250 per ounce)
Silver (7 kg/225.055 oz.) X 12 = 84kg//2,700.66 ounces = $44,560.89 (2,700.66 X $16.50 per ounce)

While these numbers seem small, they highlight how little silver (.00225 ounces/0.0699828228 grams) and gold (.0000964 oz) is actually used in the production of each iphone. The amount of silver in an iphone is about the equivalent of 1/45 a 1/10 ounce silver round.

According to the Silver Institute the following amounts of silver are needed in the production of each:
-cell phone .05-.25 grams for a total of 2.6 million to 13 million ounces of silver per year; and
-PC/lap top .3-.5 grams for a total of 3.5-5.8 million ounces of silver per year
Silver used in the production cell phones and computers and all other types of electronics adds up to over 200 million ounces each year.
