Gold to the Moon-and Beyond!
Gold has been to the moon and outer space.
Gold’s Use in Aerospace
Gold in Spacecraft
Gold has been to the moon and outer space before and will return again, literally. Due to gold’s unique properties, gold is used in every NASA space craft from manned outer space vehicles, like Orion to satellites.
Gold is highly reflective and prized for its radiant shine. Gold’s shimmering quality is used to reflect heat in spacecrafts. A gold coated polyster film reflects outer space infrared radiation and prevents over heating that would occur if the spacecraft absorbed the radiation.
Gold is also used in spacecraft electronics because it is one of the best conductors and connectors of electricity. More importantly, gold is inert matter and essentially indestructible and will not corrode or tarnish. These are important properties given some spacecraft may remain aloft for years or decades and the possibility of replacing corroded parts is impracticable or impossible.
Gold is also used as a lubricant in spacecraft because liquid lubricants like oil would degrade and evaporate due to the radiation in outerspace. Gold’s properties, in contrast, remain intact in outer space. Because gold can be flattened to less than .00001 of an inch it can be forged into thin films that can be placed between mechanical parts to serve as a lubricant.
Gold in Astronauts’ Helmets
Gold’s reflective properties are put to use in astronauts’ helmets. A thin gold coated layer in the helmet’s visor protects the astronaut from the deleterious effects of outer space infrared radiation and solar heat.
While the price of gold has fallen from outerspace in recent years, it is certain gold itself will return.
