US Mint Reports 15% Increase In First Day American Gold Eagle Sales

American Gold Eagle Sales Remain Elevated to Start 2017.

U.S. Mint Sells 46,000 One Ounce American Gold Eagles on First Day of 2017.

Sales of One Ounce American Gold Eagle Coins on the First Day of 2017 were 15% Higher than First Day of 2016.

First Day 2017 sales of American Gold Eagles were higher than many full January sales totals.

U.S. Mint Sold a Total of 88,500 Ounces of Gold on the First Day of Sales in 2017, including sales of all American Gold Eagle and American Gold Buffalo coins.

The U.S. Mint’s first sales report of the year showed that sales of one ounce American Gold Eagle sales spiked 15% on the first day of 2017, compared to the first day of 2016. In 2016, sales of American Gold Eagles were the highest since 2010.

Sales of one ounce American Gold Eagles in January 2016 were 89,000. The largest sales ever recorded in January were in 1999 when 208,500 one ounce American Gold Eagles were sold.

The U.S. Mint sold a total of 163,000 American Gold Eagle coins in 1/10, 1/4, 1/2 and one ounces denominations on the first day of sale in 2017, totaling 68,000 ounces.

The U.S. Mint also reporting selling 20,500 one ounce American Gold Buffalo coins on the first day of sales, or 500 fewer than sold on the first day of sales in 2016.

Total gold sold by the United States on the first day of sales in 2017 was 88,500 ounces.

The American Gold Eagle is minted at the West Point, New York mint which operates primarily to produce American Silver and Gold Eagle and American Buffalo coins.

The design of the American Gold Eagle coin originally appeared in 1907 on the United States $20 gold coin, or double eagle. U.S. Double eagles were minted from 1907-1933.

The American Gold Eagle is also minted in denominations of $5 (1/10 ounce), $10 (1/4 ounce), and $25 (1/2 ounce).

From 1986–1991 the American Gold Eagle bore Roman numeral dates. In 1992, the U.S. Mint switched to adding Arabic numbers for dates. The original 1907 U.S. Double Eagle also contained Roman numerals.

The American Gold Eagle is 22K gold and is considered legal tender in the United States.
