Main Stream Media and Alternative Media- Two Side of the Same Fake News Media?

Remember Rathergate?
Former mainstream media hero Dan Rather got caught peddling a fake story in 2004. Mr. Rather reported CBS had obtained documents that showed George W. Bush had tried to avoid military service in the early 1970’s. Mr. Rather presented these documents on air as evidence that proved President Bush’s draft evasion.
The alternative media did research and showed how Rather’s documents were clear forgeries by pointing out that the typeset was Microsoft Word times new roman and not from a typewriter circa early 1970’s. Dan Rather lost his job as a result of the incident.
Dan Rather’s response to this day is – yes the story was fake but accurate. Mr. Rather ardently believed that George W. Bush DID try to get out of the draft and had help in avoiding it. Even if that is correct, it doesn’t justify presenting false documents to prove the point.
Alternative Media Peddles its own False Narratives
Readers of alternative media often think of themselve as “woke” because they read stories in alternative media that point out MSM lies and deceptions (like the above Rathergate story).
These same readers, however, often swallow hook, line and sinker stories about imminent comex defaults or dollar collapses, soaring silver sales, or tales of “elite losing control”, or silver shortages, or predictions that gold and silver are set to “skyrocket”, or insist on believing “evidence” of IMF plots to enslave humanity (acchain nonsense), or believe that upcoming significant dates presented by alternative media sites will prove apocalyptic (Schmita anyone?) or upcoming events like a sovereign sized gold buy will SHOCK THE WORLD or the latest unsourced, yet widely believed story that China is launching a Gold backed Yuan “soon”!
An Alternative Financial Media Truth Standard- Fake But Accurate?
Alternative media readers will insist unsourced or obviously spurious stories are true. If you attempt to dispute a fake alternative media story you are a “shill” or a “hater”. If you finally manage to demonstrate that an ardently defended alternative media story is false they may respond, “well, that story is directionally accurate” – ie. Fake but accurate. “I mean the IMF is evil and you can’t disprove that they are not plotting with a Chinese ICO company to digitize all the assets in the world to enslave humanity” or “China IS trying to dethrone the dollar” “There are going to be gold backed digital currencies” “Silver sales WERE up for two days”.
The argument of fake but true only works on those with a vested interest in the story being true. People interested in the truth are not satisfied with explanation like, “besides you can’t prove the story is not true.” For a story to be considered objectively true, the narrator is required to present unassailably true facts. If the truth hasn’t been proven by the narrator, the reader or viewer of the story is not obligated to prove the story false.
Mainstream Media only “Fact Checks” Alterntive Media when MSM Narratives are Challenged
When stories circulated in the alternative media during that 2016 presidential campaign that Hillary Clinton might be physically ill, the MSM went on the offensive claiming “fake news” and insisting Ms. Clinton was hardier than a hybrid bull during mating season. The MSM will inevitably try to debunk (or get Google and its social media cohorts to bury) any story that challenges a MSM narrative.
When the alternative media makes fantastical unsourced claims or merely speculates but presents such speculation as fact, and such claims and speculation don’t challenge or contradict MSM narrative, the MSM ignores them. After all, if gold bugs wish to believe something is going to happen soon or next year based on some made up story or some strung together facts mixed with speculation, and no MSM narrative is threatened they will ignore it.
Alternative Media Police Thyself!
Often when the main stream media challenges alternative media stories, the alternative point of view gets stronger as the alternative media is forced to factually defend its stories, not just repeat them. This is not the case when alternative media stories get peddled and are not widely challenged. The desire to believe many of the claims of alt financial media is strong- after all who doesn’t want to hear that gold and silver are set to skyrocket. Don’t think for one moment that writers of such stories don’t know this and cater to that desire
Many completely false or incomplete or misleading alternative media stories go unchallenged, mostly because readers of the stories want to believe they are true and no one else cares enough to refute them. Patently false alternative media stories that go unchallenged by consumers of alternative financial media, do a disservice to the alternative financial media and themselves, leaving alternative media open to the charge of “fake news”.
